2018/2019 Flu Season and Vaccine Information Updates:
DHS Offers Quadrivalent Cell-based Flu Shots for the upcoming season:
What's better about the quadrivalent and why not offer the egg-based or trivalent anymore?
For years, flu vaccines were designed to protect against three different flu viruses (trivalent). Trivalent vaccines include an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus and one influenza B virus. Experts had to choose one B virus, even though there are two different lineages of B viruses that both circulate during most seasons. This meant the vaccine did not protect against the group of B viruses not included in the vaccine. Adding another B virus to the vaccine aims to give broader protection against circulating flu viruses. The difference in cost between the trivalent egg-based shot and the cell-based quad is about $2/shot for a flu shot that gives a cumulative forty-two percent greater coverage and efficacy.
Implications of Cell-Based Vaccines
Why is it significant that a cell-grown vaccine reference virus (H3N2) was used to produce flu vaccine?
Cell-grown reference viruses do not have the changes that are present in egg-grown reference viruses, so they should be more similar to circulating “wild-type” viruses, avoid the egg-adaption problem, and facilitate a faster response in case of a pandemic. Cell-based technology may offer the potential for better protection over traditional, egg-based flu vaccines because it results in vaccine viruses that are more similar to flu viruses in circulation, according to the CDC.
